THE GREATEST RAID OF ALL – OPERATION CHARIOT ST. NAZAIRE
26 – 29 MARCH

In the first hours of 28th March 1942 after a 400 mile sea passage from Falmouth, a combined force of

622 men of the Royal Navy and the British Army attacked the Nazi base of Saint Nazaire after a 400-

mile sea passage from Falmouth. They destroyed the only Atlantic coast refuge for the great battleship

Tirpitz, then making ready for sea in Norway. Five Victoria Crosses and many other medals were

awarded, reflecting the courage and daring of those involved.

After an overnight ferry crossing to Saint Malo, the tour begins with a visit to the cemetery at La

Baule, where many of those who fell during this famous raid are buried. Also there are some of the

3,000 British troops who lost their lives in the worst maritime disaster of World War II, when the

Lancastria”was sunk on 17th June 1940.

We shall attend the annual memorial service on the anniversary of the raid and walk around the

relevant parts of the town. We hope to have with us at least one of the veterans of this raid.
