‘Fort Sumter to Atlanta’

15 October;
Arrive in Charleston, South Carolina, to be met by your tour guide.
Overnight Charleston.
16
October; In the morning we shall catch the ferry out into the
beautiful bay that is Charleston harbour and land upon Fort Sumter, the cradle
of the Civil War and on which the first guns were fired.
The afternoon will be left free, to enable
you to explore the beauty of this loveliest of deep south
cities.
17 October; Today we visit Charleston’s
newest and finest treasure, the CSS Hunley, the confederate submarine that
earned its place in history as the first underwater vessel to sink a
warship. Lost in mysterious
circumstances, she lay on the seabed for 150 years, before her salvage and
restoration commencement in 2000.
We will then journey to
historic Boone Hall plantation for lunch and to view one of the ‘stars’ of the
Civil War television series ‘North & South’.
18 October; This morning we drive south to
Savannah, Georgia, another of the great
cities
of the south. After lunch, we shall
visit the 8th Air Force the museum designed to pay tribute to those
brave, young American aviators of the 2nd World war.

19 October; Savannah was protected from
the Federal navy during the ‘War between the
States’
by a series of coastal bastions. We will be visiting Forts Pulaski and McAllister, to see how different
technologies succeeded and failed in their resistance.
The afternoon will be
left for exploration of the city where fortunes were made in the ‘White Gold of
the Cause’ and where much of what ‘King Cotton’ made possible, was built in the
image of its fabulously wealthy traders.

20 October; Fitzgerald, Georgia, was founded as a community by
migrants seeking to
mend
the wounds of the Civil War. Here a
museum relates to their efforts to bind these wounds forever. In the afternoon, we shall witness the site
where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured.

21 October;
This morning we visit Andersonville
where, we shall see the controversial
monument
erected to honour Captain Henry Wirz, commandant of this notorious prison,
before paying our respects to the
unfortunate prisoners of war who died there.
This afternoon, we continue on our journey to
the National Civil War Naval
Museum at Port
Columbus, to view the remnants of the CSS Jackson and
experience a combat
simulation aboard the SCC Albemarle.

22 October; We shall tour the works of West
Point, to see the last battle site 16 April 1865 in
Georgia.

October; Today we start the
Atlanta Campaign that commenced on the 7 May 1864 at the Battle of Rocky Face
Ridge.

October: After
the Confederate withdrawal from Dalton, their next defensive was at Resaca
where between the 13 – 15 May Sherman’s troops were
generally repulsed except on Johnson’s left flank. Unable to halt the Union movement Johnson was
forced to retire towards Adairsville, where on the 17 May he hoped find a
valley to deploy his troops, but the valley was too wide and he was forced to
withdraw towards the Allatoona Pass.

October; From the 25 May to the 2 September
(when Atlanta fell) numerous battles & skirmishes were fought, today we
will look at New Hope Church 25/26 May; Dallas 26 May – 1 June; Pickett’s Mill
(27 May) & Kennesaw Mountain (27 June)
26 October; Some
free time to shop and we will finish our tour with a visit to the Atlanta
History Centre, before proceeding to the airport and a late afternoon flight.
27 October; Arrive London Gatwick early morning.
