‘AN INTRODUCTION TO THEWESTERN FRONT

 

24 – 29 APRIL 25 – 30 SEPTEMBER

 

The tour is designed to provide the participant with an overview of the Great War Western Front,

British Section. The tour visits all of the major sites sacred to the memory of British, Canadian,

Australian, New Zealand and South African troops. We visit restored trenches and bunkers (including

those used by Hitler’s Bavarian regiment), learn of the tunnelers war, see a selection of memorials and

cemeteries of all combatant nationalities and take several battlefield walks. The tour will suit the

person having a general interest and your guide illuminates the social and personal cost of war. This

itinerary visits sites not usually included on Western Front tours.

 

DAY ONE:Depart London for Folkestone and Channel Tunnel crossing. Diksmuide peace

tower /German cemetery at Vladslo and Pilckem Ridge. Overnight Ypres.

 

DAY TWO:Ypres Salient Highlights: Restored trenches, Maple Copse and Gravenstafel Ridge,

Hooge, ANZAC sites at Polygon Wood, Tyne Cot, Yorkshire Trench, John McCrae’s Essex Farm

clearing station. Last Post Ceremony Menin Gate. Overnight Ypres.

 

DAY THREE: Poperinghe, Talbot House. Messines Ridge Hill 60 walk; Caterpillar crater, Xmas

Truce football match site, Hitler and Churchill connections. Fromelles, Neuve Chappelle and Loos

battlefield. Overnight Arras.

 

DAY FOUR:Tunnelers’day: Vimy Ridge and Waterloo tunnels in Arras. Also Lorette de Notre

dame French national monument. Bullecourt and Cambrai. Overnight Arras.

 

DAY FIVE: The Somme battlefield; Beaumont Hamel and trenches at Thiepval Wood, Thiepval

Memorial, Pozieres, Lochnagar, Courcellette, Delville and Mametz Woods, Pals memorials at

Sheffield Park. Overnight Amiens

 

DAY SIX:Villers -Bretonneux, Le Hamel, Australian National Memorial.

Return to London.
